Boiling an egg has to be one of the easiest thing to cook for almost anyone!
Well, so it seemed, until you have tried boiling an egg and ended up having the egg flesh punctured and half-way gone while peeling-off the shelf. Then, you will realize that boiling an egg is not as simple as it seems, especially when it gets to peeling off the shell. Although, you might not necessarily be bothered about the punctures in the egg if you are making it for yourself. But when making a dish like egg curry or using it to garnish a dish for your guests or an event, then having eggs that like they have been eaten half-way already is definitely not what you would want to settle for.
Ways To Boil Egg
There are different techniques you can use to boil eggs. But a boiled egg is of no use if you haven’t peeled off the shell and that is the tricky aspect. So, here are some hacks you can try to help you boil the perfect hard-boiled eggs that you can easily peel.
Boiling The Egg
a) Boil the Eggs in Hot Boiling Water
Put water on the fire and bring to a boil. Remove the eggs from the fridge and put right inside the boiling water.
b) Add Baking Soda or Vinegar
Add a teaspoon of Baking Soda or Vinegar into the boiling water and allow to boil for 10 to 15 minutes.
Using these techniques, you will get hard-boiled eggs that are easy to peel. When you put egg inside boiling water, the heat shock detaches the film from the shell, making it easier to peel off. Also, adding baking soda to the water increases the alkaline levels in the water, which allows the egg white to loosen from inside of the shell.
c) Break The Raw Egg To Boil
Another way to boil eggs is to break the raw eggs then boil. You won’t have to go through with peeling off the shell. This technique was reported on Food NDTV for going viral after the hack was shared by a Facebook user named Peggy.
To do this, you have to:1. Grease a heat-proof bowl with oil2. Break the egg(s) inside the bowl. Do not mix3. Place the bowl in a pot filled with water and cover it4. Put it on the fire to cook for 5 minutes on medium heat.
With this method, you will get a large hard-boiled egg loaf. Well, depending on the number of eggs used. You do not need to place it in cold water to cool or peel off any shell. This hack comes in very handy if you have to chopping eggs for your salad or sandwich toast.
Peeling The Eggs
a) Put The Eggs in Ice-cold Water. After Boiling, set a bowl of ice-cold water or just cool tap water and put the eggs inside immediately after boiling. The cool water will help to stop the cooking inside the egg. And this will make the shell come off easily.
b) Another way to peel the egg shell off easily is to crack the bottom of the egg a little, before letting it sit in the bowl of cold water.
c) Another Hack for an easy-peel hard-boiled egg found:
- Boil an egg hard, that is for up to 12-15 minutes
- Fill a glass cup with cold water and put the hot hard-boiled egg inside.
- Cover the glass with your hand or any saucer and shake it vigorously. Make sure the egg hits the sides of the glass. This will shock the egg, making the shell crack and release the egg from its shell.
Now, this hack works pretty well when you are having just one hard-boiled egg. But if you like your egg soft or half-cooked, then this hack will not work for you. And if you have to boil more than one egg for chopping, then it’s more likely you would want to try out the other hacks mentioned above.
